The Heartbreaking Transformation a Single Year Has Caused in the US

Twelve months back, the situation was utterly separate. Prior to the American presidential vote, reflective Americans could admit the country's significant faults – its unfairness and inequality – but they could still see it as the United States. A free society. A place where legal governance held significance. A state guided by a dignified and decent public servant, notwithstanding his advanced age and growing weakness.

Nowadays, as October 2025 ends, many of us barely recognize the land we inhabit. People alleged as undocumented migrants are detained and shoved into vans, at times denied due process. The left side of the White House – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque event space. Donald Trump is harassing his political rivals or perceived antagonists and demanding federal prosecutors surrender an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are deployed to US urban areas on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – liberated itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of what could amount to almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Colleges, law firms, media outlets are buckling from leader's menaces, and billionaires are handled as nobility.

“The United States, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has crossed the brink into authoritarianism and fascism,” Garrett Graff, stated recently. “In the end, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred in America.”

One awakes to new horrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – how severely declined our nation is, and the speed at which it occurred.

However, we understand that the leader was duly elected. Despite his deeply disturbing initial presidency and even after the alerts linked to the awareness of the conservative plan – following the president personally said publicly he intended to rule as a tyrant just on day one – sufficient voters chose him over his Democratic opponent.

As terrifying as the present situation may be, it's more frightening to understand that we are just nine months under this leadership. What will three more years of this downfall position us? And suppose that timeframe turns into a more extended duration, since there is no one to limit this ruler from deciding that additional tenure is required, possibly for security concerns?

Certainly, there is still hope. We will have midterm elections the coming year which might establish an alternate political equilibrium, in case Democrats recapture either chamber of parliament. There are elected officials who are attempting to impose certain responsibility, like Democratic congressmen who are launching an investigation regarding the effort to fund seizure from legal authorities.

And a national vote three years from now could initiate the path to healing precisely as the prior selection set us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist countless citizens demonstrating in public spaces throughout communities, as they did last weekend during anti-authority protests.

A former official, commented this week that “the slumbering force of the US is stirring”, exactly as before post-McCarthyism during the fifties or during the Vietnam war protests or throughout the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the listing ship eventually was righted.

The author states he understands the signs of that resurgence and observes it occurring currently. As evidence, he references the widespread marches, the broad, cross-party resistance against a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to sign government requirements they report only approved content.

“The dormant force perpetually exists inactive until some venality grows too toxic, some action so offensive of the common good, specific cruelty so loud, that he is compelled but to awaken.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

In the meantime, the crucial issues persist: can America return to normalcy? Is it possible to restore its standing internationally and its commitment to legal principles?

Or should we recognize that the historical project succeeded temporarily, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts suggests that the latter is accurate; that everything could be finished. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, convinces me that we have to attempt, by any means we can.

Personally, working in journalism analysis, that involves urging journalists to adhere, more fully, to their duty of holding power to account. For some people, it could mean participating in election efforts, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to safeguard voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we were in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The reality is, we cannot predict. The only option is try to not give up.
