Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the early names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was sacked on Sunday following the team's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League campaign.
And both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the team - are part of the names to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would create a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the former Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of games for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the club directors as they start the process of hiring a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising choice given he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
