Following multiple episodes of suspense, schemes and sabotage, The Celebrity Traitors has reached a thrilling finale
Spoiler alert - This article discloses key moments from Celebrity Traitors finale
Throughout the season, audiences saw murders, double-crosses, serious side-eye, and a memorable moment that cut through all tension.
Yet on Thursday night, the ultimate victor of the inaugural Celebrity Traitors was revealed.
From nineteen participants, just a handful remained: Traitors and faithfuls facing off for the prize.
Before long, the field narrowed to just three: the remaining contestants.
In the end, funny man Alan Carr was crowned the winner, in a shocking result that went viral and left him emotional.
"It's been tearing me apart, my apologies," he exclaimed, revealing to the other players that he'd always been a traitor. "I feel terrible about this."
"You played amazingly," they comforted him. "Everything's fine."
Social media immediately exploded with the news. "Most awful traitor ever being the best traitor ever," commented one user.
"There could not have been a better conclusion," wrote a different person, while a third called it "the television highlight of the year."
His chosen charity, Neuroblastoma UK, will receive all the prize money, with the final pot amounting to eighty-seven thousand five hundred pounds.
Alan Carr's transformation from comic relief to strategic player was among the most memorable aspects of the season.
However, his victory still shocked viewers in shock, as noted by entertainment reporters.
"The thought of him, of all people, executing a masterclass in deceit felt about as likely as him maintaining a straight face through one of his own punchlines."
On subsequent discussions, fellow players explained the reasons nobody had truly doubted him.
"He might have appeared to breakfast in a green cloak and I wouldn't have believed he was deceiving us. I was too busy laughing," a player said.
"The majority didn't vote for him because how does one eliminate a person so loveable?" questioned a different contestant.
Carr said he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his time on the program.
"I want to participate once more... I don't think it would be successful again!"
Thursday evening's installment was lengthened to 70 minutes on television. It had an unusual opening than usual, as every celebrity were aware who'd make it at the morning gathering.
There was particularly inspiring, and very un-Traitors-esque music, as we recapped some moments from every remaining player's time in the castle.
As ever, the comedian gave us some of the most memorable lines.
"To be honest, I began this game as something of a nervous wreck. I've thrown some really good friends to save myself, I've eliminated national treasures openly. Apparently I'm a better liar and player than I thought."
At the same time, another contestant commented that reaching the conclusion was "way more stressful than playing for a national team", while someone else said he was "totally surprised" to have lasted this long.
In the beginning of the finale, various contestants appeared to be attempting to become the fashion standout of the competition, taking over from the previously eliminated fashionable contestant.
Carr emerged at the morning meal resembling a 1950s US chat show host in patterned burgundy attire, before changing into a bejewelled white suit.
But he was outstyled by a fellow player's burgundy formal wear. Impressive style.
Next up was the challenge, with the final players boarding a train named - naturally - The Traitors Express.
The challenge saw them ripping up portraits of eliminated players. Have sympathy for one participant who was hit in the head multiple times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Soon after, the moment arrived for the elimination discussion.
The deceivers made a pact in advance, pledging to support each other. "We've progressed significantly, I won't throw him under a bus," said a player, while their partner just giggled.
However, one did stick to his promise. But, managing to stay unnoticed for the majority of the competition, their partner still received the majority elimination votes.
The last deceiver appeared he was in a world of pain to be the final deceiver remaining. "Now I'm on my own, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm a loose cannon, a rudderless ship."
Social media and onlookers were equally disappointed.
"I hoped against this contestant to be eliminated. An endearing deceiver," said an observer.
"Your legacy will remain in the show's legacy," wrote another user.
However, there remained no time to dwell on their elimination. Before long, they were at the endgame - which was the moment everyone anticipated.
The last players gathered around the ceremonial fire. Meanwhile, the partnership broke down, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was painfully banished - after a shock vote from their ally, who turned against them.
"This pains me to be stabbed in the back at the final moment like that," remarked the ousted contestant. Subsequently, it was revealed that if they ever communicate, the eliminated contestant calls their former ally by a betrayer's name.
Ultimately, only three contestants remained in the game: the final trio.
One player, looking incredibly smug, chose to conclude the competition. The same decision was made by another, and it all came down to the third, who did the same - which meant that the traitor was the winner.
For observers, the moment where the other players comforted the champion was "beautiful TV". "I anticipate it will be in the running for outstanding scene at next year's awards," they commented.
Fortunately, the winner quickly regained composure from his emotional outburst, and could finally appreciate the moment.
"Such an emotional journey. I thought I was terrible at deception, I had no poker face and now I stand the champion," the winner said.
He also made light of that infamous murder - his best friend in an early episode - by reaching over the host in the concluding moments and touching her cheek.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his trademark giggle.
The last few weeks of famous people scheming, plotting and the occasional surprising incidents may seem like one big crazy jumbled dream. Yet it actually occur. And we will miss it.
