‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s path from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic
The first time Gorka Guruzeta played in the UK, an teenage representing the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he hit the target. On his next visit he played in British turf, against Sunderland following that, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City six weeks after that, well, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he scored again. An excellent finish, also. “Actually,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what they had to do: he was replaced.
“I became very upset,” the attacker admits, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the early training is set to begin; after it, the quick travel to Loiu airport and a further journey to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Uttering the name lights him up. It has become a difficult season for the club, due in part to the demands of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. But, take in the big picture, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a final at home by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary surrounded by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
The player believed it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player his father and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he went through a ACL injury, dropped, a relegation and a call back before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to live the best days of his career.
“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but with every stage you go through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in a handful of matches between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and I tear my cruciate.
“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as something positive because it made me change the outlook. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it helps. You cultivate routines previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, as a youngster does. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, address that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact 200,000 times. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. He left upset in the pandemic season, aged 23, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, dedication, confidence, and when eventually the requirement appears in your position, a return could happen. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the previous season which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
