Blast Claims Three Police Officers While Executing Property Removal Procedure in the Verona Area
A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 people got wounded in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the residence in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and a third person who ran away following the blast was found shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The explosion could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location revealed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.
Background and Motive
The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.
Mediators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the siblings caused the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The official was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors told local news, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
