Administration Reveals Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Early Information
Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.
Although Vought did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Legal Challenges
Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the moves in court.
This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.
At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been recalled to carry out staff reductions.
An analysis argued that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
